Voice Over Recorder needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Something not working, or an idea? Email voice-over-recorder@jensderuiter.dev. I usually answer within a few days. It helps to mention your macOS version and the microphone you use.

Getting started

Choose a session folder at the top of the window, press Space, leave a beat and talk. Press Space again when you are done. The full list of keys is under How it works in the app, or ⌘?.

Common questions

The level meter doesn't move, or nothing gets recorded

Check that the right microphone is picked in the Microphone menu, then open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone, and make sure Voice Over Recorder is switched on.

The first word of a take is cut short

The first 0.3 seconds after you press Space are left out, so the key click never ends up in a clip. Leave a short beat after pressing before you start talking.

My sentences are chopped into several clips

Raise New clip after at the bottom of the window. It is how long you have to pause before the next sentence becomes its own clip.

Several sentences end up in one clip

Lower New clip after, or leave slightly longer pauses between sentences.

Breaths or bumps become clips, or a quiet line goes missing

Adjust Ignore softer than. Lower it to drop more soft sounds, raise it to keep quieter speech. Set it to 0 to keep everything.

I deleted something by accident

Press ⌘Z. Every action can be undone, recording included. Every take is also saved untouched in the "raw takes" folder inside your session folder.

Where do my files go?

Exports are saved in the session folder as numbered files, like voiceover_001.mp3, and never overwrite each other. Change the file name in the window and the numbering follows the new name. ⌘S saves a WAV instead of an MP3.
